More than enjoying lasting memories around the grill, outdoor kitchens can provide a ton of advantages to one’s health, as well as a property value to their home. At BBQGrills.com, we spend countless hours building, designing, and educating our customers on the benefits of outdoor kitchens, so that you can focus on what you’re good at, making the memories around the grill. We also understand there are some newbies to the outdoor kitchen scene and they don’t know all the ins and outs of building an outdoor kitchen. When discussing with a first-time buyer of an outdoor kitchen, one of the most frequently asked questions we get is…
What is an outdoor kitchen?
In the most basic sense, an outdoor kitchen is a way to greatly increase the amount of livable and usable space you have in your home. Imagine if your indoor kitchen was moved to the outdoors. It’s the new living room, the new gathering spot for family and friends, and a way to enjoy eating healthy foods, without having to leave the house, or order take-out. Simple outdoor kitchens feature a built-in gas grill and an access door. While most sophisticated outdoor kitchens feature more emended products, such as pizza ovens, side burners, refrigeration, and even BBQ sinks.
Almost every outdoor kitchen is completely customized to your home, your outdoor cooking needs, and your style choice. It’s a way to turn a typical backyard into the coolest hangout spot on the block. But other than being awesome (trust us they are) what are the actual advantages to having an outdoor kitchen?

4 Reasons Why You Need an Outdoor Kitchen
At BBQGrills.com, we’re BBQ people, so trust us when we say that this list could be a mile long. But, if you’re new to outdoor kitchens and you’re considering either building or buying one, we want to lay out some of the best reasons why getting an outdoor kitchen is a great investment.
Entertaining
Some people are entertainers and some people aren’t. But if you like to have friends and family over and have a good time with food and entertainment then a big comfortable space outdoors is perfect for you. Having an outdoor kitchen opens up so many options for entertaining. Just imagine this; you’re standing over by your custom built-in grill, and the burger patties are looking good. Your friends are chilling out on the patio furniture watching the game on the T.V. It’s a little chilly out but nobody minds because you have a patio heater set up. You pull the patties off the grill, and get everything set up for people to make their plates. Then you walk over to your custom outdoor refrigerator, grab a drink, and take a seat before everybody starts chowing down. And other than the picture-perfect entertaining you can do with your outdoor kitchen, there are some really practical advantages too.
Here’s an obvious one, there’s more space outdoors (yeah I know. Duh.) and that means people won’t be crowding around you while you’re trying to cook and entertain them. Plus, if you have some patio furniture and an outdoor T.V. to go along with your cooking gear then you’re set to be the entertainer of the year in your circle of friends.
Family Time
My wife and I started our business as a family-run business and we value family above everything else. That being said, quality family time is getting harder and harder to get nowadays. It feels like everybody is always just in their rooms on their phones and staring at a TV for hours and hours.
If you wanna create an area where you can bring back genuine family time an outdoor kitchen is a way to go. It’s a place where your whole family can congregate and it feels more fun and more lively than sitting around the living room or dining room and only then we can see the advantage of a outdoor kitchen.
Backyard Upgrade
I know this one seems obvious, like yeah of course it’s going to be an upgrade to the backyard. But I was actually thinking of the resale value of your house. Some estimates say you can expect around a 55x ROI (Return on Investment) with your outdoor kitchen. But that’s on the low end. Other estimates were putting the ROI around 100x or even 200x the return on your kitchen. Maybe you’re already living in your forever home and you don’t ever plan on selling it. If that’s the case then you’re creating something that can be enjoyed by your family for years and years to come and enjoy the Advantage of outdoor Kitchen.
Being Proud of Your Home
I’m a straight shooter, so I’ll be honest with you. There’s a really satisfying sense of pride when you have an awesome backyard with an outdoor kitchen. I’m not advocating for vanity here but… having the nicest backyard in the family or amongst your friends and having your home be the place that everyone wants to go to when you hang out feels like such a great accomplishment.
There are probably dozens of other reasons why outdoor kitchens are so great. But those 4 are some of the biggest reasons why newcomers in the outdoor kitchen and grilling world should seriously consider an outdoor kitchen.
That being said, let’s rapid-fire a few more reasons why outdoor kitchens are so awesome:
- You’re adding a ton of new usable space for the family to enjoy
- Eating outside on your patio furniture is more fun and exciting than sitting at the dinner table every night.
- When you cook outside, those smells stay outside. Pretty handy for those “it tastes better than it smells” dinners.
- Depending on where you live, summertime can be pretty brutal. When you cook outside you’re not heating up the house and making the AC work overtime to counteract it.
- Being outdoors has a long list of health benefits like vitamin D absorption. This is more important now than ever since a lot of us spend most of our time indoors away from the sunlight.
- With a proper outdoor kitchen, you add a lot of versatility to your cooking. Grills, smokers, and pizza ovens are great ways to spice up your arsenal.
What’s Trending in the Outdoor Kitchen World
15 or 20 years ago you were pretty much set if you had a good old trust charcoal grill. Having a complete kitchen in your backyard was pretty outlandish for most people. But that changed. And in recent years there have been a ton of changes happening in the backyard kitchen world. And these new trends make right now one of the most exciting times to be looking into creating an outdoor kitchen for you and your family.
One of the most notable changes is the domination of smokers in the market. They just took the world by storm and now it’s pretty commonplace to see mid-tier BBQs and grills come standard with a smoker.
And after seeing the success of smokers, companies began to throw every kind of cooking tool they could think of into these outdoor kitchen areas.
One of these cooking tools that I’m so grateful is becoming more and more common is the pizza oven.
I don’t know about you, but family pizza night is basically a holiday in my family. But do you know what’s even better than family pizza night? Make your own pizzas and then cook them yourselves in your own wood-burning oven.
I know I’ve said that outdoor kitchens will turn you into the coolest entertainer in your circle a lot. But come on, make and cook your own pizza in your own pizza oven. That’s hard to beat.
If You’re Considering an Outdoor Kitchen
Outdoor kitchens can be pretty tricky to bring together if you don’t know what you’re doing. Believe me, I’ve seen way too many “I can do it myself” horror stories. That’s why I want to address 3 of the most important things you need to consider when it comes to building your kitchen.
Know what You Need
Not everybody wants or needs a $5,000 built-in high-capacity wine cooler in their backyard. You need to sit down and really figure out what you want your outdoor kitchen to be. Do you want a cool place for the family to hang out while you cook dinner? Or do you want the ultimate entertainment package? The built-in grill with custom storage. The refrigerator and state-of-the-art wine cooler. The outdoor rated TV with all the bells and whistles.
Your Style
I don’t think it’s any surprise but you can go pretty deep down the customization rabbit hole. When you’re designing your kitchen you have to get layouts correct, choose materials, choose colors, etc. There’s a lot to think about and it needs to be thought out methodically. These pieces of equipment are expensive. You don’t want to get halfway through a build just to discover that you want a different storage setup with your built-in grill.
Work with Good People
Working with bad people can ruin any project in any area of your life. I already said it before but these outdoor kitchens can be very expensive projects. if you work with people that aren’t agreeable you’re going to end up getting an end result that you’re not satisfied with. And this extends from the company that sells you the equipment all the way to the contractors that are going to build your Islands and a built-in grill if you choose to opt for those.
But on the other hand, working with exceptional people to create your dream outdoor kitchen can be an invigorating experience. I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging but, BBQGrills.com is full of exceptional people who will work their hardest to help you achieve your dream outdoor kitchen.
